A UR and the puzzle fell apart.
Seemed too easy.

Do not discount yourself. Your just getting better. Sometimes the easiest moves can elude you.

I saw what Marty saw. I guess I didn't realize that an X-wing still rated a puzzle as VH.

Also an UR(type 2) probably the same as Earl.

We seem to discuss all these things without reference to a specific position... Just to clarify or confirm, yes, a UR in the following position:
Code:

+--------------+--------------+-------------+
| 9   35  35   | 4   7   26   | 8   26  1   |
| 28  1   4    | 26  5   89   | 3   7   269 |
| 278 78  6    | 1   89  3    | 249 249 5   |
+--------------+--------------+-------------+
| 4   379 379  | 8   2   1    | 679 5   679 |
| 78  2   789  | 56  4   56   | 1   3   79  |
| 15  6   15   | 9   3   7    | 24  24  8   |
+--------------+--------------+-------------+
| 6   789 1789 | 3   189 289  | 5   289 4   |
| 3   4   589  | 257 6   2589 | 279 1   279 |
| 15  589 2    | 57  189 4    | 679 689 3   |
+--------------+--------------+-------------+

Play this puzzle online at the Daily Sudoku site

i.e. (is this what you all meant?) I noticed that R2C9 could not be 9 because it would result in the 24 UR. The 26 naked pair that arises unlocks the puzzle.

Yes, that was a Type 2 rectangle which essentially accomplishes what the X-Wing does.

Perhaps a better way to evaluate that UR is to note that the <4>s are locked in an X-Wing pattern. Thus, <2> can be removed from both R3C7 and R3C8.

The result is the same. However, when one of the UR digits forms an X-Wing, I generally find it easier to see the implications.

Just used x wings and like Tracy, I would question whether x wings rate as a VH.

PS regular fans: if you are looking for an extreme VH try the Escargot I posted in "Other Puzzles". Supposedly designed as the hardest Sudoku ever. I got as far as the naked singles!!

If it's easier for you to see the implications, that's fine, but I don't see why it's a "better" way. But taking note of your X-Wing observation, and I'm no rectangle expert, but it seems that this is simultaneously both a Type 2 and a Type 4 rectangle.

I got to same stage. And a common "2" in row1 and row 7 eliminate the 2 at r3c8 and r8c6. And then everything is easier now.

Marty,

Yes, a poor choice of word on my part. I merely meant that it was perhaps easier.
