Ted, I'm still left at this point after performing your two steps.
Code: | *-----------------------------------------------------------*

Danny, Sorry to say, but I agree with you that the second step does not complete the puzzle. Not sure just what I did because I was in a rush and did not write good notes. My guess is that instead of making the noted deletions, I set r1c9=7, which does complete the puzzle.
Also in looking at the puzzle again, I realize that r2c8 should have been deleted by clean-up following the first move.
Hopefully I will have some time later this evening to complete the puzzle properly..........

Ok, here is an additional step which I believe completes the puzzle, based on the code posted by Danny.
anp(23=4)r8c98-r56c8=(4-3)r4c7=r4c2-(3=2)r3c2; r8c2<>2
The complete three steps are
Quote: | Kraken x-wing(2)r68c89=(2)r8c2-r23c2=r3c1-r3c6=r1c6; r1c9<>2
anp(47=2)r1c97-(2=7)r9c7-r7c9=r1c9; r1c6,r2c7<>7
anp(23=4)r8c98-r56c8=(4-3)r4c7=r4c2-(3=2)r3c2; r8c2<>2 |

Following Ted's example! A different uglier and targetted almost-turbot for a one-stepper...
Quote: | almost-skyscraper(2) r9, r2, r2c8 ; r8c2<>2, r3c1<>2
skyscraper(2)[r9c1=r9c7-r2c7=r2c2]
||
(2)r2c8 - r1c79=r1c6 - (2=7)r3c6 -------------------- (37=2)r3c2
(2)r2c8 - (3)r2c8=r2c7 - (3=4)r4c7 - (48=3)r4c42 / |

Peter, you may call it ugly, but I like it when it does a better job..........

Settling for just one of the eliminations makes it less ugly ... and preserves the one-stepper. Using your notation style ...
Quote: | almost-skyscraper(2) r9, r2, r2c8 ; r3c1<>2
skyscraper(2)[r9c1=r9c7-r2c7=r2c2]
||
(2-3)r2c8=r2c7-r4c7=r4c2-r3c2=r3c1 |

Ronk, much nicer thanks! Should have seen it - but once you go down one line of thinking sometimes hard to see the alternatives |

After a three-day struggle, I managed to cobble together an eight-step solution. |

My solver's best solution:
Code: | after basics
+-----------------------------------------------------------------------+
| 8 5 6 | 3 1 27 | 247 9 247 |
| 9 247 47 | 5 6 8 | 237 237 1 |
| 237 237 1 | 9 4 27 | 5 6 8 |
|-----------------------+-----------------------+-----------------------|
| 1 348 2 | 48 7 6 | 34 5 9 |
| 467 9 5 | 1 2 3 | 8 47 467 |
| 3467 34678 47 | 48 5 9 | 1 2347 23467 |
|-----------------------+-----------------------+-----------------------|
| 467 467 3 | 2 8 5 | 9 1 47 |
| 5 24 8 | 7 9 1 | 6 234 234 |
| 27 1 9 | 6 3 4 | 27 8 5 |
+-----------------------------------------------------------------------+
# 54 eliminations remain
c167\r139 finned Swordfish <> 2 r1c9
<27+4> XY-Wing r9c1/r5c1+r8c2 <> 4 r7c1
<37+2> XYZ-Wing r2c7/r2c8+r9c7 <> 2 r1c7
XY-Chain: (3=4)r4c7 =7r1c7 =4r1c9 =7r7c9 =6r7c1 =3r6c1 => r4c2,r6c89<>3
|
The finned Swordfish exposed some important basic steps prior to the subsequent advanced steps! |
